GETTING MY HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS ... WORK HABITS

hey there! this is such fun. habits ... we are all creatures of habit. be sure and read the comments from this week ... there is some great stuff there. thanks all! i wish i had time to email you each individually but know that i read your comments and enjoy them so much.

so the photograph above {a 'To Do folder} is something quite charming that i found here in my parents house. note: my mother would die if she knew i was sending this out into the web world. i'm quite sure she is convinced that blogging is akin to someone stealing your identity on the internet or some such! anyway, it is the sweetest thing. my mother, for as long as i have known her, makes folders, lists, calendars ... she is very organized and she does it with flair. i mean who uses calligraphy on their 'To Do' folder? she does; it's wonderful.

it reminded me of my work habits ... how do i get work done ... what do i need to do to get it done? ... here are my thoughts ...

- lists. i make them. daily & weekly. this is a habit i have gone in & out of but as i have grown older my head is more and more in the clouds so the list just helps me. it's a necessary habit that i have forced into my life. my lists are nowhere as stylish as my mothers but i do like them to have a nice flow to them.

- freedom. i can't have all of my design/art work completely sketched out. when i go to the letterpress, for example, i always have an idea of what i will be doing but almost always it changes. i feel it is a habit of mine to sort of wing it sometimes.

- eye-candy / mind-candy. i need a constant stream of beauty, color, form, art, thought, conversation, life, nature ... it is so much my habit to have this before i go in to do my work or while i am doing my work that i find i'm stuck if i don't have it.

so how about it?
what is a work habit that works for ya?
cheers much friends!

hi mav,
my work habits consist of mostly bad things.
procrastination, hesitation, and distraction.

i collect massive amount of reference photos, mostly on line, which i constantly have floating on my computer screen while painting/drawing.

i also to watch movies/tv when i do design work (not for art).

and yes, of course, constant list making!

your mom is so cute in this way! i like how you define freedom & eyecandy as habits, i wouldn't have considered them as such until now... they are mine too:)

perhaps as evidenced by my comment on morning habits, i am a list maker. love, love, love lists! maybe i need to make my lists more stylish as your mother does. the folder photo is so very sweet.

i think one of my worst work habits is too much thought. i sometimes feel like i have to learn everything about something before i just go for it. i think i need more of that "wing it" spirit. tell your mom that we promise not to steal her identity, but we do love it so far!

hello far-away friend! It's beautiful here today, and I'm thinking of you enjoying a 'different' spring. So..habits? Definitely a list maker, a planner. And I must have my workspace CLEAN and tidy before I can begin working. I also have this silly habit of buying a new pen whenever I start a new writing project. Must have the new pen to start. ;)

sweet mav.... it's so fun to get some insight.... the folder from your mom is excellent.

my list is almost the same as yours... lists, a plan, but one that is open for sure.... and i so need eye and mind candy... perhaps this is also why we all blog....

oooh lists!! i love lists! i had to cut myself off from them. hubby and i spent an entire week at home just doing things we needed to catch up on and when we finished we realized that our list was still so long that it was incredibly depressing and felt like it was a waste of a week. i can put everything, everything, everything on a list!! writing this just made me think though that i might be more effective if i limited myself to 10 to do items a day instead of getting overwhelmed! thank you for the idea!! that is my new habit!

oh I love lists
crossing things off the list actually lets out endorphins

I sketch the best with music
I sew the best with tv

The list really made me laugh. My mum is extremely organized and I think I've got that from her. I have always been sorting stuff in folders and files. I'm also makings lists of everything. My boyfriend use to tease me about it, but I think it is a relief for him as well as I'm taking care of all the practical stuff :D

Hi mav...with me its lots of lists but i lose them or forget them so i write things all over my hand! I also have an idea book(actually i have a full shelf of them) any ideas i have for photography/things to make/decorating ideas/what to have for dinner/changes i want to make in my life.. you name it its in there. As for eye candy i get a lot of inspiration from yours and the other blogs i visit how lucky we all are to have such a creative community at our fingertips!

I am nodding along to all the lists of work habbits you have too, and seconding them all....I also like to deliberately leave things close to the bone time-wise for big projects, as the pressure makes me perform better.....I work and work, creating huge amounts of mess and clutter until I can take it no more and have to CLEAN up. Things always go in this cycle of chaos, and short-lived order...fuelled with cups and cups of tea, and the hum of a computer that lures me away from real work all too often!! Xox

I feel very comforted reading about these habits as habits often feel soo personal that sometimes they stay hidden when really they are soo close to my heart that they truly complete me. like your mother(!) i put great care and penmanship into my to do lists as each thought and action is its own work of art even in its early stages of completion (or forever incompletion.) i found that i can let go of obsessions once i see them on paper in my own handwriting.
