ART PART THREE
« Previous Main Next »

good morning.
still on the journey; art, everyday living & emotion. glad that you're still with me! it seems just about time to move to emotion ... rapture, sensation, awareness ... wonder, fuss, stir ... upheaval, disturbance, commotion.
the it that gives us the motivation to create and the it that causes us to name something as art i believe, and many of you have mentioned, comes from emotion or intent or fervor. whatever you want to call it we have to be m o v e d.
stephanie says, art, to me, is about intent. so, if we are talking about photography - someone can take a snapshot and discard it (no intent) and an artist can come along and present that same snapshot in a new way (with intent) and it becomes art. your grapefruit is nothing more than a nutritious way to start the day without your intent to bring to our attention the colors, the shapes, the symmetry, the contrasts. the grapefruit is not art. it is your intentional seeing that is art.
my intentional seeing, as she puts it, comes from a moment of wonder where i see it, respond to it and am motivated to create. just a small moment; a moment without grandness; a moment that should be without judgement. and so i repeat from the beginning of our conversation ... does it not make sense to acknowledge that art is everywhere? art is us? art then becomes personal. it becomes what it is to any of us. we create because we have to; because emotion or intent pushes us there. doing and seeing art coming from within; no matter where within really is {whether you're showing in a gallery or doing drawings each day in your journal} ... it comes from the experience/lifetime that is you.

i have been thinking about the emotional words that maya angelou said this week at the funeral of coretta scott king. she said:
i want to see a better world.
i want to see some peace somewhere.
i want to see some honesty.
i want to see some fair play.
i want to see kindness & justice ...
in my lifetime.
these words, now emblazened in my memory as art, come from a lifetime of emotion, emotion that i know nothing about first hand. however, this is the fabric of her life and she shares it through words ... it therefore becomes art to whomever it resonates with. it takes on meaning; it adds texture to my life.
what am i trying to say? well, nothing concrete accept this ... my entire thinking on this plane was motivated by being tired of people telling me what art is; tired of feeling, ever so personally, that i constantly need to judge my own art, my own emotion. and all for what? i repeat again, does it not make more sense to acknowledge that art is everywhere? art is us? art, everyday living & emotion -- a way of life if we allow ourselves the freedom & space to get there.
---
thank you for all of your thoughts.
this has been a fun week of philisophical & artistic adventure ... and i think the longest posts i have ever written on p2p! see what happens when i get all riled up?!
until tomorrow, mav
ps. the bottom photograph today is a lovely bird that abigail was m o v e d to make me. it hangs above my work table and reminds me how i can touch someone with my art ... sometimes a hard thing for me to know ... but a very important thing to remember.

I am so with you on this. I think it does make more sense to "acknowledge that art is everywhere." I have been thinking a good deal about awareness. In order to see, to notice-- you must be aware so that you can appreciate the tiny wonderful details. Your appreciation and wonder (stemming from the awareness) allow you to see that art IS all around. Thank you truly for this conversation and for posting maya angelou's beautiful words. xox

Beautiful mav...I like the way you say 'it adds texture to my life'..I think that is so true that art/emotion add constantly changing and varying experiences to our lives...that are all the better for them.
So very glad to see the little homage to soaring up on your wire of wonderment :) x

I was moved by Maya Angelou's words too and her "monumentalness." She has endured and endured...and despite her frailty, her voice leapt out of her like a lioness's roar.

I've been thinking about your posts and yesterday I realized how much I enjoy seeing my little girls toys/clothes etc. laying around in all the places that before her held nothing. I love the smallness of her shirts and the bright colors of her tea set piled up next to our bathtub. I want her little things in every corner of our house lately. I think I will post more on this soon; maybe in soulemama's corners? We shall see. Thank you for your inspiration.

i have to believe art is the everyday.
i am shy to define myself as an artist because i do something else most of the time to make ends meet... but art is a vision.... a vision of the everyday... what some may see as simply a grapefruit, you make it art through your vision... your vision inspires those around you to see a grapefruit as a piece of art...
yone has to believe that alone inspires people... and how need that inspiration is in this world...

shari: hi! awareness ... yes. i think that might even be relating to what i'm talking about with emotion. emotion can be connected directly to how aware you are ... how you are feeling, that kind of thing. good stuff!
abigail: texture indeed. life is just one layer upon another layer. at least i think this way. thanks for commenting! :)
frida: this woman rocks, doesn't she? we are lucky to live in her lifetime.
abby: thank you for reading & commenting. email me if you want to talk about anything in particular.
mati: good to hear from you. thank you for taking time to comment & be a part of the artistic community all around us!
angela: how enchanting! thank you for sharing this. i hope we do see this in soulemama's corners project or on your blog. it sounds amazing ... the smallness of life has such power. good luck with it all.
bugheart: lovely ... all of it. art is in your heart no matter what you do to bring in the income. here's to grapefruits! :)
